Instrumental in launching the Oberhausen Manifesto at the Oberhausen Short Film Festival in 1962 – a Manifesto that yelled from the rooftops about the need for a new German cinema (a cry Fassbinder seized upon), Edgar Reitz is best known (and quite justly known, at that) for his mammoth trilogy Heimat, the idea for which came to him as he struggled with The Tailor of Um, a 1978 biopic of the aviator Albrecht Berblinger. Although criticized for its selective interpretation of German history, the film is considered a landmark for a whole host of different reasons, not least the fact that it addressed German history in a way that had not been done previously. < show less
