An Introduction Bresson always aimed to achieve a great emotional response from an audience, and believed that the best way of accomplishing this was to destroy the usual codes used in cinema to tell the audience how to feel (through, say, obvious acting, editing or an intrusive score). By reducing these codes, the audience would be able to feel the emotions of the characters rather than have the actors transmit the feelings themselves. As a result, a Bresson film can be an extremely affecting experience, as anyone who has seen Au Hasard, Balthazar will testify.
