Stephen Frears has enjoyed a successful career in both Britain and later Hollywood when he broke onto the scene with Dangerous Liasons in 1988. His films focus on character and narrative, rather than ascetics, and frequently feature societal outsiders. Insightful and compassionate but never sentimental, his work is challenging and assertive.
