What can be said about Raging Bull, one of cinema's
most poetic films? Paul Schrader and Mardik Martin
have fashioned a temperamental screenplay, a day in
the life of Jake La Motta, the prizefighter whose life
never seemed to venture out of the ring. Let me tell
you a story, he says, introducing himself in a
documentary about the film, and Martin Scorsese does
just that, unleashing the untamed beauty of a wild
animal. Robert De Niro as La Motta gives one of the
most amazing introductions to a character in his
opening speech - "I remember those cheers" - and one
of the finest screen performances to ever come before
a camera. An iconic and lyrical achievement, Raging
Bull exhibits a writhing, burning passion, a yearning
for greatness and great love beyond human boundaries.
Robert De Niro gained sixty pounds to portray the
ailing boxer and, in the final moments of decline, he
captures the universe and the dreams of humantiy set
