This beautiful film is one of only two Kenji Mizoguchi made in colour, in a career which produced over eighty films. It follows a period in Japanese history dominated by Civil War, beginning in 1137, when the country was ruled by the Fujiwara Clan. Though the Fujiwaras are supported by local armies of soldier monks in the Buddhist temples, they are opposed by a Cloister Court, under the rule of an ex-Emperor who had abdicated but still retained influence. Their military strength was provided by the Taira, a samurai clan led by Kiyomori, who would destroy the Imperial Court and replace it with a military government. A wonderful epic, Tales Of The Taira Clan is one of the greatest colour films ever made, a very rare treasure whose vibrant warmth imprints on the soul. You will not be more priviledged in seeing this extraordionary historical tapestry, one of the world's most priceless films. < less
