"Monsignor Quixote" (1985) is a touching and gentle film about friendship and the search for faith. Based on Graham Greene's novel, and set in Spain, it is the story of friendship between a humble, innocent Catholic priest Father Quixote (Alec Guinness) and the Communist ex-Mayor of his town, Sancho Zancas (Leo McKern). They embark on a roadtrip through Spain. Their travels inspire engaging conversations that explore their beliefs on politics, theology, faith and hope, be it in Communism or Christ. Rodney Bennett's direction focuses closely on the bond of friendship between the two men and allows the rich dialogue to flow like a smooth wine. Composer Anton Garcia Abril's score has a playful yet poingant theme that gently carries the theme of hope in the face of doubt. Beautifully-filmed and superbly acted, this film is a delight for those who enjoy thoughtful, literate films. < less
