Film Description

A dark, almost expressionist version that had the sense to work with, rather than against, its low budget and 23 day shooting schedule. Magnificent in some ways, and even in those moments that don't quite come off, a piece of pure cinema. You feel Welles could actually commit these brutal acts and McDowall for once isn't wasted. Once seen, it lingers like a beautiful nightmare.
