Rohmer is one of cinema's greatest celebrators of people and their clumsy attempts to find love, and this marvellous quartet of films, each based around one of the four seasons, is a rare cinematic pleasure. These understated dramas, filled with uncanny observation and good humour, display a benevolence towards their characters that will captivate even the most determined misanthrope, although all have an acerbic edge which adds to the pleasure.
Each film has a very simple plot, revolving around recognisably flawed individuals who often make foolish or rash decisions in their relationships. In A Summer's Tale, a young man finds himself in an impossible situation when indecision leads to three romantic interests, whilst the female protagonist of A Winter's Tale similarly flits between two partners. The other two films involve matchmaking and beautifully capture shy courtship. Autumn is perhaps the best of all. Magali, an insecure widow unaware of her allure, is a wonderful romantic lead, and her gradual willingness to take a chance is beautiful to behold.
