Loosely a polemic on the untrustworthiness of factory bosses in pre-revolutionary Russia, Strike is an interesting film both in terms of Eisenstein's personal development as a film maker and as a historical record of Soviet filmic propaganda in the 1920s.
It is, perhaps, a film rather too easily ignored by students who tend to move quickly to Battleship Potemkin. Strike is a film to be savoured, with its multi-layered narrative and filming techniques that are redolent of the use of montage that Eisenstein explored later in Potemkin. But where that film can, fine though it is, seem rather pompous and melancholic at times, in Strike, Eisenstein is not afraid to explore a use of humour - as illustrated in the dissolve sequences that first bring the spies to the attention of the audience.
Beware, rather poorly placed subtitles, particularly in the opening sequences.
