Woody Allen, 1971-1979

Film Description

Comprises:

Bananas (1971), the crazy, disjointed story of a New Yorker who leaves his mundane job to pursue dreams of glory in Latin America.

Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Sex (But Were Afraid To Ask) (1972), a visual reinvention of Dr Reuben's well-known book. The story is told in seven sketches; one is about falling in love with a sheep, while another features a giant breast threatening the countryside...

Sleeper (1973), a sci-fi spoof featuring giant inflatable breasts, the ingenious and kinky Orgasmatron and a wealth of hilarious one-liners. Woody wakes up in the future to discover that his rent is 2000 months overdue!

Love And Death (1975), Allen's most lavish film, with spectacular exterior scenes dovetailing nicely with his usual interior set pieces and hilarious comic timing. Cinematic references to Bergman, and literary ones to Chekhov abound, topped by a justly famous bedroom farce seduction scene. After this film Woody vowed never to leave New York to make another film. Features a music score credited to S Prokofiev!

Annie Hall (1977), an unexpected Oscar-winning success, is a breezy, fractured love story held together by some of the sharpest lines and scenes of the last thirty years. With Diane Keaton in her best film role, the film is Woody's through and through - he excels as co-writer, performer and director. Pure gold.

Manhattan (1979) was described by For Andrew Sarris as "the only truly great American film of the 70s". High praise indeed, but surrender swiftly to Gordon Willis's shimmering monochrome camerawork of the Big Apple, listen to the exquisite Gershwin score, laugh at some of Allen's sharpest, most poignant dialogue, and its very hard to disagree. Arguably Allen's masterpiece, its portrait of middle-class NY life remains unsurpassed.
