It is 2057, the Sun is dying and mankind faces extinction. The planet's last hope is the Icarus II, a spacecraft with a crew of eight. Their mission: to detonate a nuclear bomb that will ignite their fading star.
With this tantalising conceit, Danny Boyle (28 Days Later) forges a well-crafted, absorbing science fiction film. Boyle's regular writer Alex Garland may be too beholden to genre conventions (the motley crew of expendable astronauts, the distress signal, the otherworldly intruder), but the director, his production designers and special effects teams compensate for this familiarity with some stunning visualisations.
There is much to enjoy, from the spaceship itself – its giant golden shield deflecting the Sun's heat – an astronaut stranded in space as the Sun comes into view, and a truly trippy finale. But the really fun part is the observation room, where the foolhardy instruct the ship's computer to open the shade a little more each time, basking in the Sun's brilliance and knowing that just a fraction too much and they're toast.
