Film Description

France, 1893. Following years of abuse, poverty and rejection a former soldier, Joseph Bouvier, shoots his beloved and then attempts to kill himself. Surviving with two bullets in his brain, he is ejected from a state medical facility and becomes a beggar, serial rapist and killer. Upon his capture, the Judge assigned to his case sees this poor unfortunate as the perfect vehicle to advance his career as a politician, and sets about employing any means necessary to hound a confession out of him. Through the circumstances and actions of both men Le Juge Et L'Assassin takes a wider look at the problems endemic in a society that breeds hopelessness and desperation amongst its lower classes, then condemns them to a justice system whose machinations are sometimes as heinous as the crimes it seeks to punish.
