However tragically Jeremy Brett’s life may have ended, his testimony remains (along with Basil Rathbone and Peter Cushing) incarnating a nigh-definitive vision of Conan Doyle's super-sleuth. These three collector’s Digi Stacks contain Sherlock Holmes: The Adventures and The Return, The Casebook and The Memoirs, and all the other Granada outings. While the early and mid-period adaptations remain the best (before Brett’s bloated appearance and increasingly over-mannered performance scuppered the final entries), the series is scripted, directed and acted with true brio. It’s often forgotten that David Burke was the first Watson in the series, and is every bit as subtle and impressive as his successor, Edward Hardwicke. An ummissable collection. < less
