When the Braggi family patriarch dies, his will dictates that the family orange business is to be shared between the two sons: Antonio (Ian Bannen) and Cesare (Richard Burton). There is another codicil – Antonio is to ask for the hand in marriage of the lovely Adriana De Mauro (Sophia Loren). Unfortunately Adriana is in love with Cesare. She agrees to the marriage to save her mother from destitution and Cesare leaves the village, heartbroken. When Antonio dies suddenly, Cesare returns to take care of the business and Adriana. Then when she is diagnosed with a deadly disease Cesare takes her away on a voyage on which they finally consummate their love, but will fate really allow them to live happily ever after?
