While Eisenstein is constantly heaped with praise by film critics, Pudovkin continues to be undervalued, despite the fact that his films remain considerably more entertaining. They may not have ingenious montage editing, but they more than make up for that in their emotional power and lyrical photography. Storm over Asia was his last silent work, and one of his best. Eschewing the usual heavy﷓handed Soviet propaganda, the film tells of British attempts to set up a puppet emperor in Mongolia, claiming him to be the heir of Genghis Khan. Pudovkin revelled in the freedom of location filming, and the result is a fresher and far more modern film than most of its Soviet contemporaries. Its characters are individuals rather than symbols of the down﷓trodden proletariat, and there is humour too in the stereotypical British imperialists. In short, a real treat! < less
