Film Description

Verhoeven’s mischievous sci-fi shoot-em-up has always divided opinion. Does it achieve a higher plane of satire by enthusiastically embracing the mercilessly right-wing doctrine of its source novel (by Robert Heinlein), or is it just another excuse for low-concept, hi-tech, CGI bloodshed on an epic scale? Intellectual fans of the Dutch maverick will tell you the former, but the evidence is seriously flimsy. Either way, like all of the director’s Hollywood fare, Starship Troopers succeeds chiefly as a visceral experience.
