A dazzling infusion of theatre and cinema, closely modelled on Taymor's 1994 off-Broadway production of 'Titus Andronicus'. There's a performance of extraordinary, controlled power from Hopkins in the title role (reminding us what a loss he is to the stage) and strong support from Harry Lennix as the villain, Aaron. In less capable hands, the play's relentless brutality could simply prove numbing; thanks to Taymor and her cast, it has inspired one of the most emotionally devastating Shakespearean films ever made.
