Film Description

Jones is at her most tempting as the wilful country girl who succumbs to the wicked squire. The English countryside was seldom evoked more powerfully (or luridly) - you can almost smell the Shropshire countryside. Jones's accent is, let's say, interesting.

Review by Trev on 25th August 2004

Being born in Shropshire and knowing the countryside in this film I am biased, however I still found this film enjoyable.

The story of a young village girl trapped between the lusty fox-hunting squire and the straight-laced parson is rather cliched by today's standards and I couldn't stop thinking of "Tess of the D'Urbervilles". Likewise it is fair to say that the film does contain the type of melodramatic cliches which films of this ilk and age are prone to.

Once the viewer is aware of this though they can sit back and enjoy a feast of symbolic shots, haunting music and beautifully filmed (if occasionally over-coloured) rural countryside. The film-makers obviously tried to capture the deep, mystic nature of Mary Webb's writing and characters, with some success. Still not sure about Jennifer Jones accent, though!

Article - "The Life and Spirit of Michael Powell" by Ray Durgnat
Thursday 7th March 2002

Powell's bestknown films are spectacular, sensual, fanciful. The others are quiet, retiring, almost secretive. Even, disappointing; until odd details tease your mind, and gradually the simplicity reveals its depths.

Born 1905, Powell was a country boy ...  View article in full
