Five years before Fellini approached the same subject, Casanova was given the Dennis Potter treatment in this six-part BBC serial. Although a diversion from Potter's typically autobiographical works, the life of the 18th Century libertine lends itself perfectly to some of the author's preoccupations, such as sexual and religious freedom.
