These twelve animated presentations of Shakespeare, courtesy of a Welsh/Russian co-production, have an inventive, artisanal quality that lifts them above the ordinary. While their length makes them suitable for introducing Shakespeare to the young, their skill, beauty and sensitivity to the originals make them suitable for study by those who know the plays already. The dialogue, barring a few lines of narration in a couple of the tales, is made up entirely of Shakespeare’s own words and is clearly read by seasoned British actors. Animation techniques vary with each film. There’s delicate puppetry in The Winter’s Tale, oil painting on film cels for As You Like It in which the magical air of the Forest of Arden is captured in colourful Dufy-esque charm, while the candlelit walls of Elsinore are effectively suggested by oil painting on glass in Hamlet.
The plays included are Macbeth, Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, The Tempest, Twelfth Night, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, King Richard III, As You Like It, Julius Caesar, The Taming of the Shrew, The Winter’s Tale and Othello.
