An unruly youth, who rejected a vocation to the priesthood to fight in Indo-China, he was dishonorably discharged from the army and only began acting when a Hollywood talent scout spotting him escorting an actress friend at Cannes. With his rugged good looks and sour charm, `the male Brigitte Bardot' proved a durable genre tough guy, most notably in such Jean-Pierre Melvile classics as Le Samourai (1967).
